Such a lovely place to visit if youre in the North West, cant wait to go back next time we are visiting the in laws - gorgeous gardens and the owners - who we know well, are incredibly welcoming - highly recommend - big love
Beautiful gardens, some formal planting and then equally stunning informal areas too. The best of Lancashire. Lovely place to stop for a bite to eat too.
Very disappointing, untidy, unkempt and overgrown - total rip off, don't waste your money! Response from owner is laughable.- 3 acres? Not even 1 acre was open for 4.50 each and what was open was embarrassing. lots of dead plants some in pots, some on top of soil with empty pot next to it. 3ft+ nettles were quite healthy. Perhaps consider using admission charge to pay for gardener/student to clean/tidy up.
We were greeted by a colourful and inviting seating area, perfect for a nice cuppa and cake. The downturn followed immediately: the misunderstanding of the concept of ambient music in the shape of blasting classical music, with no chance to even hear a bird or the humming of a bee. (Don't get me wrong: we are quite fond of this genre, as long as the volume and the setting is adequate!)And the disappointment didn't stop there:Nearly 90% of the garden is in a horrible state. Empty plastic pots or pots with dead plants everywhere. There is no excuse for a foxglove sitting dead next to its plastic pot. Why didn't it get planted?Hydrangeas and rhododendrons urgently need rejuvenating. As do a lot of other plants. The setting is supposed to be informal and cottagestyle and we've certainly seen many informal and cottagestyle gardens, but the Ridges is just, plainly speaking, horribly neglected. The garden has seen grand days, but these days are long gone. The owner tried to justify the sad state of the grounds, as response for a previous negative comment, with 3 months drought and the lack of gardeners. Point taken, but why charge 4.50 instead of adjusting the admission fee to the state of the garden? 1 would have been adequate! Lower the fee, until the garden is up to scratch again and for now stick to earning money with tea and cakes! First you invest and then you can collect! The B&B area seemed to be in better condition, but was inaccessible to us(of course). We are both keen gardeners with informal and cottage style gardens ourselves, although not quite as big, but we know what is required to stay on top of it, drought or not. Having had experience of many gardens I was somewhat disappointed with this one. It was really more of a woodland walk than a colourful display of planting. I appreciated the wildness of the garden and children may enjoy the mystic of passing through iron gates and walking down narrow paths but if you are keen on colourful planting rather than shrubs and trees, I couldn't recommend it.
